Château des Quarts is located in Pouilly-Fuissé, Burgundy. In 2012, two old friends, Dominique Lafon (Domaine des Comtes-Lafon) and the Macon sorcerer, Olivier Merlin, jointly purchased the 2.23-hectare monopole vineyard, Clos des Quarts.
Prior to the acquisition, Merlin had been buying grapes from the vineyard for many years to produce his finest Pouilly-Fuissé wines. When the opportunity for acquisition arose, the dream became a reality, and the clay-gravel soil with its fine iron-rich limestone subsoil became theirs. The upper layers of the vineyard are perfectly naturally drained, and the subsoil consists of Bajocian Crinoidal limestone, similar to the terroir of Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, and parts of Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Clos de Vougeot.
Château Clos des Quarts is synonymous with the vineyard situated at the top of the slope, enjoying perfect east-facing sun exposure. With a planting density of 10,000 Chardonnay vines per hectare, it is dense compared to the norm. The oldest vines were planted in 1917, and all the vines are between 60 and 100 years old.
The excellent wines from this organically cultivated vineyard see the light of day in Domaine Merlin's cellars in collaboration with Dominique Lafon. Only 6-7% of the barrels are new, and the rest are between 1-3 years old. High quality and great potential from two of Burgundy's foremost men.
