Domaine Albert Grivauld
Domaine Albert Grivault in Burgundy is one of the old, proud houses of Meursault. Today, it is led by Michel Bardet and his sister, grandchildren of Albert Grivault. The latter acquired the exceptional vineyards Les Perrières and the monopoly vineyard Clos des Perrières in 1879. At its peak, the estate covered a total of 15 hectares. Charmes was sold to Hospices de Beaune, and other parcels were sold over time. Most recently, one hectare of Clos Vougeot was sold in 1931. Today, the estate consists of six hectares spread across five appellations. Michel's two children, Claire and Henri-Marc, are slowly taking over the reins, with Claire warmly welcoming visitors. There is an almost elevated atmosphere when touring the estate or simply visiting the house.
Michel Bardet is "the grand old man," and his experience and presence command respect. He is the mastermind behind the white wines, considered exceptional by experts. With a signature of vibrant, fine acidity and surprisingly diverse, beautiful, balanced layers of minerality, Grivault's Meursault 1er Cru Monopole "Clos des Perrières" took the top spot when the French wine magazine Bourgogne Aujourd’hui set out to find the best white wine among all Premier Cru's.
The white wines are bottled just before the next harvest, having spent 20% of their time in new barrels, especially in the case of 1er Crus. The red wine matures for 18 months, and the grapes are destemmed before vinification.
Leaving the estate, one is left with exquisite aromas lingering in the mouth, nose, and memory. It is the feeling of having witnessed something truly superb, a demonstration by a master that lingers strongest.
