Château Léoville Poyferré (2nd Growth) is located 45 km northwest of Bordeaux city in the western part of Saint-Julien, right in the heart of Médoc, where it was the largest vineyard during the French Revolution.

 

The castle's history dates back to 1638 and gained early recognition when it was classified as a 2nd Growth in 1855. In 1920, the property was acquired by the Cuvelier family, who still manage the affairs of the castle. In 2018, Sara Lecompte Cuvelier took over as the general director after her cousin Didier Cuvelier. Her skilled team includes Cellar Master Didier Thomann, Vineyard Manager Bruno Clenet, and oenologist Isabelle Davin.

The castle boasts an impressive 80 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc.

The 1st wine is named Château Léoville Poyferré 2nd Growth, and the 2nd wine is Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré. The 2nd wine is produced in collaboration with Château Moulin Riche, whose wines also come from the property's vines.

Château Léoville Poyferré has a pure expression of lush, ripe fruit with concentration and power. Aromas of blueberries, spices, and other black berries, along with truffle and tobacco notes, combine with a sensual texture. The wine can reluctantly be consumed when young after several hours of decanting. However, it is too robust and tannic, and it is best enjoyed after aging for 10-15 years in the bottle, varying depending on storage conditions and vintage. In the best years, the wine will be at its peak after 15-35 years. Younger vintages (five to 10 years) should be decanted for an average of two to four hours. Older vintages only need decanting to remove sediment and should be served immediately after.
