Château Montrose
Château Montrose (2nd Growth) is located five kilometers north of Pauillac in the eastern part of Saint Estèphe. The castle dates back to 1820, making it one of the youngest classified estates in the entire Médoc, yet simultaneously one of the most renowned.
Following three generations of the Charmolüe family, Olivier and Martin Bouygues purchased the castle in 2006. Under their leadership, Château Montrose embarked on a spectacular reconstruction at the beginning of the 21st century. The extraordinary project took seven years, ensuring that the castle is now one of Bordeaux's most forward-thinking and modern estates. Approximately 228,000 bottles of the estate's 1st wine, Château Montrose 2nd Growth, and about 108,000 bottles of the 2nd wine, La Dame de Montrose, are produced annually. The castle also produces a 3rd wine, Le Saint-Estèphe de Montrose.
The 1st wine, Château Montrose 2nd Growth, is full-bodied, refined, masculine, elegant, and complex with a fruity, firm, and tannic structure. The latter requires time in the cellar, benefiting from at least 10-20 years in the bottle, depending on the vintage. It is typically ready to drink between 15-50 years. Younger vintages should be decanted for two to four hours, while older vintages (+15 years) only need decanting to remove sediment.
"The past deserves great respect. We will modernize if that is good for the quality of the wine and the environment, but we respect history."
- Martin Bouygues -
