Chassagne-Montrachet Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet from Château de la Maltroye.

Jean-Pierre Cournut unequivocally called 2022 "a great vintage". It is more precise than 2020 and more readable as well in terms of the underlying terroir.

Burghound.com/Allen Meadows tasting notes 95/100 + "Don't Miss" (June 2024): "From a 0.33ha holding on the southern end of the Chassagne side. This also reflects subtle wood influence on the elegant, pure, and airy aromas of white peach, acacia blossom, spiced pear and a whiff of exotic tea. The succulent and equally gorgeously textured larger-bodied flavors display impressive power while coating the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm acid spine supporting the wonderfully persistent finish. This wine always ages well and the 2022 version should more than amply repay extended keeping. 2032+".

Almost as highly-regarded, Bâtard-Montrachet sits just below the acclaimed Le Montrachet vineyard across both Puligny and Chassagne-MontrachetBâtard-Montrachet is a Grand Cru vineyard at the base of the Montrachet hill, across the communes of Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet. Along with its Grand Cru neighbors Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet is considered to be one of the very best terroirs in the world for the Chardonnay grape variety, making complex, structured wines with excellent aging abilities.

Bâtard-Montrachet's name, like many in the area, is said to derive from the process of inheritance. A vineyard on the southeastern slopes of the Montrachet hill is thought to have been divided up by a local lord, the Seigneur de Puligny, between his oldest son, the Chevalier; his daughters, the Pucelles (maids); and his illegitimate son, the bâtard (French for bastard).
