2022 Weingut Andres Forster Ungeheuer Riesling Grosse Lage
Germany / Pfalz / VDP Grosse Lage / Riesling Weiss
Location, slope, and substrate render Ungeheuer vineyard an exceptionally unique entity in German winemaking culture.
Situated at 125-180 meters elevation on the edge of the Haardt massif, with slopes of up to 30% facing east and southeast, the vineyard benefits from optimal sun exposure.
The soil and substrate comprise a diversity of weathered red sandstone with clay and limestone, as well as limestone fragments and small traces of basalt. These diverse conditions ensure excellent water retention, facilitating optimal supply of water and minerals to the vines during summer.
It's no wonder that Reich Chancellor Prince Otto von Bismarck commented on the wines from this vineyard with the words: "Dieses Ungeheuer schmeckt mir ungeheuer".
The wine is complex and elegant, with dark fruity aromas of blackcurrant, golden apples, and citrus.
The subtly spicy notes and hints of exotic aromas lend depth and excitement to the wine.
The taste is taut and crisp, yet with a stony acidity that imparts an exceptional mineral complexity, making the wine almost aristocratic in its long and precise aftertaste.
