Santenay 1er Cru La Comme from Château de la Maltroye which also makes a white La Comme.
La Comme is a large 1er Cru vineyard within the Santenay appellation at the very southern end of the Côte d'Or escarpment. Pinot Noir covers a large proportion of the land on the site but there is also a small amount of Chardonnay. The 21.6 hectare vineyard is located at the northern end of Santenay, on the border with Chassagne-Montrachet – widely regarded as being the better part of the commune. Les Gravières 1er Cru is on the slope below La Comme, while Beauregard is on the same line of the slope to the southwest. A couple of small, village-level vineyards occupy the hillside above. Referred to as La Comme and Comme Dessus they sit between the 1er Cru site and the woods on top of the hill.
La Comme's gentle slope gives it an excellent position to benefit from the morning sun, as vines are angled neatly toward the southeast. Furthermore, the northern end of Santenay benefits from a more marly soil than in the southern part of the commune, with a higher proportion of clay. The soil in La Comme is shallow and gravelly with, unusually, more clay than in Les Gravières below.
The name gives itself to a small incision in the hillside here (La Comme coming from the same origin as La Combe, denoting a small valley).
La Comme 1er Cru wines are some of Santenay's best, perhaps second only to Les Gravières and Clos de Tavannes on the hill below.
